Lots going on in San Diego!

The San Diego Jewish Film Festival is happening right now with screenings and special events through the 26th.

Friday and Saturday, the annual San Diego Mardi Gras will take place downtown. San Diego Ballet will perform Romeo et Juliet at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center.

Next Friday, the Hutchens Consort will hold a Fiddle Fest with Irish fiddle master Winifred Horan at St. Andrews Church. Mexican rock band El Tri will perform at the Observatory. At the Artist's Outpost, you can learn how to make festive Mardi Gras Masks.

Next Saturday at the Hall of Nations at the International Cottages, the San Diego World Affairs Council will host a panel discussion on The Humanitarian Response to the War in Ukraine. At the Central Library, the Culinary Historians of San Diego will present the talk Fiesta! The History of San Diego’s Mexican Restaurants. On the outdoor stage at the International Cottages, Island Mist will perform. At the House of Hungary (also at the International Cottages), Petofi Poems will be performed set to music by vocalist Noémi Sárog and guitarist Róbert Sinha. Iranian-American comedian Max Amini will perform at Mic Drop Comedy in Kearny Mesa. The House of Panama will be hosting Tamika Burgess who will discuss her debut novel, Sincerely Sicily. There will be a Soul Food Buffet Dinner at the American Legion Post 434 in Chula Vista in celebration of Black History Month.

Sunday, you can join the House of USA for an African American Heritage Celebration featuring food, entertainment, and more. WorldBeat Cultural Center their annual Tribute to the Reggae Legends/ Bob Day will go down. Celtic band Highland Way will perform at the Grand Ritz Theater in Escondido. Black Voices/Black Writers, at the First Lutheran Church, will be a staged reading of the work of classic and contemporary black writers including Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Bil Wright, Audre Lorde, and more.

Tuesday, at the Brooks Theater, the 5-day Oceanside International Film Festival will start.

Wednesday, the UCSD Library’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host an online talk with Dr. Raquel Martin who will talk about Resistance Fatigue. Unión del Barrio will screen Precious Knowledge, a film about students and teachers in Tucson, Arizona who fought to establish a Mexican-American Studies program in their school.

Next Thursday, the Timken Museum will be offering an online talk about The High Renaissance in Italy. There will be Afro-Caribbean Dance & Drumming Workshop held at UCSD that is open to the public. The UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy will present a webinar on the Divergent Trajectories of China’s Email-Order Brides. At La Paloma Theater, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen the romantic comedy Lasciarsi un Giorno a Roma (Breaking Up in Rome). At Point Loma Nazarene University, there will be a Writers Symposium with the acclaimed Mexican-American journalist Maria Hinojosa. At the Grand Comedy Club, the comedy group Los Mojados will perform in Spanish.

Next Friday at Balboa Park, the Unbreakable Spirit of Ukrainians Concert will commemorate one year of Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion. Tito Puente Jr. will perform at the Sycuan Resort. The House of Scotland will host a concert by Jim, Susie and Beth Malcolm at the International Cottages.

Next Saturday at MiraCosta College, the Black Nerds Expo will celebrate Black comics, books, art, video games, pop culture, and more. Jane Muschenetz, the author of All the Bad Girls Wear Russian Accents will have a book signing at the Central Library. The San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art will honor its 2023 Keepers of the Culture recipients at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park. At Centro Cultural de la Raza (also in Balboa Park), the Hearts of Indigenous Resilience fundraiser/exhibition will raise awareness and funds to support efforts for MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) and their families.

Next Sunday at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, Cenicienta - A Bilingual Cinderella Story will be performed. The Schools of Flamenco Series dance concert will take place at the Normal Heights Community Dev. At the Oceanside Museum of Art, there will be a panel discussion about the Herstory of Black Women in the American West. At SDSU, Gospel Fest 2023 will take place at Montezuma Hall. One Drop Redemption at the Music Box will play tribute to the late-great Reggae legend Bob Marley.

Local theatrical offerings (not mentioned above) include The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci at the Old Globe, The Ferryman at New Village Arts Theater in Carlsbad, El Huracán at the Old Town Theatre, The High Table at Diversionary, and Under a Baseball Sky at the Old Globe.
